The woman who made the sky measurable

Distance is the hardest quantity in astronomy, because brightness alone cannot distinguish a dim nearby star from a brilliant distant one. Henrietta Swan Leavitt, employed at Harvard College Observatory to examine photographic plates, studied variable stars in the Small Magellanic Cloud. In work published in 1908 and extended in 1912, she found that the brighter a Cepheid variable is, the longer its cycle of brightening and dimming takes. Because all the stars in that cloud are at roughly the same distance, the relation between period and apparent brightness had to be one between period and true brightness. That converts a Cepheid into a standard candle: time its cycle, learn its real output, compare with how bright it looks, and the distance falls out. The 1912 paper carries Edward Pickering's name with a note that it was prepared by Miss Leavitt, which is how the observatory credited women.

The crack that has not closed

Leavitt's rung supports everything above it, including the measurement of how fast the universe is expanding. Calibrating Cepheids and using them to reach supernovae, the SH0ES programme led by Adam Riess reported a Hubble constant of 73.04 ± 1.04 kilometres per second per megaparsec. Inferring the same quantity from the cosmic microwave background, the Planck collaboration obtains 67.4 ± 0.5 in the same units. Those two numbers do not overlap, and the disagreement stands at roughly five standard deviations — too large to be chance, and stubbornly resistant to explanation. The obvious escape, that crowded fields were corrupting the Cepheid photometry, was tested with JWST in 2024 and rejected at high confidence. The tension remains open, and is either a systematic error nobody has found or a gap in the standard cosmological model.

Why an unresolved number is a good one to keep

A discrepancy this durable is more informative than an agreement, because it is the only thing in the field guaranteed to be teaching somebody something. It also demonstrates that the ladder metaphor is literal: an error in a low rung propagates upward, so the disagreement may be about Leavitt's stars rather than about cosmology. The honest entry for the Hubble constant is not a number but two numbers and a dispute, which no fact box has room to print.

Example: Two accurate rulers that disagree about the same table mean one of them is not measuring what its owner thinks it is.

Verdict. Leavitt's period-luminosity relation made cosmic distance measurable, and the ladder built on it now returns an expansion rate conflicting with the early-universe value at about five sigma.

Overturned if: a systematic error in either the distance-ladder calibration or the CMB inference brings the two values into agreement.
