02. Food — Blue Zones and the Boring Fix
Overrated · The Blue Zones longevity claim
Blue Zones
Five regions — Okinawa, Sardinia, Nicoya, Ikaria, Loma Linda — are said to produce exceptional centenarian numbers through diet and lifestyle. Dan Buettner and Blue Zones LLC popularised the claim via National Geographic and bestselling books since the early 2000s. In 2024, Saul Justin Newman (UCL) analysed the birth and death records behind supercentenarian claims and found them unreliable. Japan found in 2010 that 82% of citizens recorded as aged 100-plus were already dead; Greece found in 2012 that 72% of centenarian pension claims, about 9,000, were for the dead. Newman's paper won the first Ig Nobel Prize in Demography, September 2024, still unpublished five years on. Concentrations of extreme old age track poor record-keeping and pension fraud, not a demonstrated diet effect.
Underrated · Universal salt iodisation
Iodine deficiency was, as of 1990, the largest preventable cause of mental impairment, affecting over 2 billion people. UNICEF coordinated a fortification push with the salt industry after the 1990 World Summit for Children. Iodised-salt coverage in the developing world rose from under 20% in 1990 to about 70% by 2000, reaching 85% in Latin America/Caribbean and 84% in East Asia/Pacific. The programme costs about 10 cents per person per year. Several low-income countries remained below 50% coverage at the time, though no dispute exists over whether iodisation works where it reaches households.
The gap
Fine dining, superfoods, and the Blue Zones narrative are photographable and marketable; fortified salt is a package on a shelf. The Blue Zones critique is itself contested: demographers Gianni Pes, Bradley Willcox, Michel Poulain, and gerontologist Robert Young dispute Newman's unpublished analysis, citing Sardinia's supercentenarians cross-validated against civil and church registries. Iodisation has no comparable dispute over whether it works, only over which countries it has not yet reached. Visibility rewarded the story with a bestseller; it did not reward the programme that reached hundreds of millions of households.
Example: Ten cents of salt a year prevented more documented harm than a five-region diet story a UCL demographer says may be a records artifact.
Verdict. The Blue Zones story carries more public certainty than the record-verification underneath it currently supports; iodised salt prevented harm at a scale nobody tells stories about.
Overturned if: Newman's analysis clears peer review and the demographers' registry cross-validation is shown to be flawed, or a country still below 50% coverage is shown to gain nothing from raising it.
